C.R.E.S. was founded in September 1987 by Presidential Decree. It is a public entity under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Technology, but functions under private law and has financial and administrative independence. The basic aim of C.R.E.S. is the promotion of the applications of Renewable Energy Sources (R.E.S.) and Rational Use of energy. The Centre is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. The board includes a representative of the E.U. as well as representatives from the General Secretariat of Research and Technology/Ministry of Industry Energy and Technology, the Federation of Greek Industries and the Public Power Corporation.

It is divided in three departments : the Department of Programmes (Wind Energy Programme, Biomass Programme, Passive and Hybrid Solar Systems Programme, Active Solar Systems Programme, Photovoltaics, Small Hydro Programme, Geothermal Energy Programme, Rational Use of Energy Programme), the Department of Documentation and Information (Promotion of Energy Technologies and International Cooperation, Information Systems, Training, Library) and the Department of Administrative and Financial Services. Since 1992, C.R.E.S. occupies its own modern facilities, which were acquired with a grant from the E.U. on a 10.000 m2 of land at the 19th km. of Marathonos Ave, at Pikermi, Attika. In addition to the 2.000 m2 of main working area, where more than a hundred (100) scientists specialised in the fields of R.E.S. and R.U.E. work, the Centre possesses a test station for wind turbines as well as laboratories for biomass, photovoltaics, battery testing, passive solar systems and wind energy, machine shop, conference rooms, library, computer and data base which is connected with other national and international information networks. The above laboratories provide technical services such as measurements, certification of materials, standardisation etc. C.R.E.S. has also developed co-operation with a large number of public and private organisations on a national and international level.

The main funding source of C.R.E.S. comes from competitive and other programmes from the European Union, the national contribution to such programmes and from work out on behalf of third parties.

C.R.E.S. has been selected by the E.U. as a member of the Organisations for the Promotion of Energy Technologies (O.P.E.T.) and as a Centre for the technical management and evaluation of Community programmes (THERMIE/T.T.M.)

For better coordination and cooperation with the E.U., C.R.E.S. maintains an office in Brussels.

The mission of C.R.E.S. is the following :

* Executes applied research and development of technologies economically viable and environment friendly in the fields of R.E.S. and R.U.E.
