Savinor receives the Portuguese Minister of Environment for the signing of the Amendment to the Environmental Compliance Agreement

Savinor signed the Amendment to the Environmental Compliance Agreement, last 29 August, together with the Municipality of Trofa, the Portuguese Environmental Agency, Águas do Noroeste and Trofáguas, in an event attended by Jorge Moreira da Silva, the Portuguese Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy, who approved the same.

Savinor's premises, in Covelas, hosted this ceremony, which marks the closing of a long process that will allow minimizing some of the company's external activities. Prior to the protocol ceremony, there was time for a visit to the company's premises and the lagoons that are to be retired.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Savinor, João Pedro Azevedo, stressed the importance of this day that marks the resolution of a long-time desire of this administration, adding that this was a long but necessary process to reach a sustainable environmental solution. To achieve this agreement, João Pedro Azevedo pointed out that it was essential to find a technology that would solve a problem that greatly affects the populations, since it greatly exposes the environment to the effects of the process of treating wastewater. In addition, this solution should not be allowed to compromise the future of the company. Savinor recognises its obligation to actively contribute towards the sustainable development of the country and the town where it is located.

The Mayor of Trofa, Sérgio Humberto pointed out "after so many years, and after many the government's promises this agreement is finally achieved due to the will and work of all stakeholders. In this process, it was necessary to reconcile three factors. Give quality of life to the population and preserve the environment, but this is a company that we want to keep in the municipality of Trofa because it employs about 230 workers, many of them from Trofa. These three aspects are sometimes not easy to reconcile, but fortunately we did it and here's the proof that it was possible".

Pimenta Machado, from the Portuguese Environment Agency, stressed how important this amendment was to the populations and the environment, resting on it is the responsibility to communicate to those present the main changes arising from this agreement: "Until now, the process was drainage with release of gases, which, even in small concentrations, cause great inconvenience. In 2006, there was already an effort to minimise the problem, mainly in atmospheric gases. Now we will create an interceptor that will connect Savinor's effluent to Agra's WWTP, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, extending for 7 kilometres, of which only about 200 metres need to be built, and which will allow the surface impoundment system's elimination, which is the main source of the odours. The establishment of a pre-treatment is undertaken by Savinor in a total investment value of 1.5 million euros".

Jorge Moreira da Silva, Minister of Environment, sponsored this ceremony, referring how important the environment is for the country's economy itself: "The environment is not only a cost of context, but rather a way to create investment and economic development. It is a mistake to think otherwise. Portugal has all the potential in this area. Green jobs grew even in times of crisis, and it is one of the areas of great importance for the future", concluded Moreira da Silva.
