Six years later, it was finally known this Tuesday the prosecution order of Banco Espírito Santo (BES). Former BES president Ricardo Salgado is accused of 65 crimes: one crime of criminal association, twelve crimes of active corruption in the private sector, 29 crimes of qualified fraud, five of infidelity, two of market manipulation, seven of money laundering, eight document forgery and one of qualified document forgery.

From left to right, the parties criticize the delay in bringing the indictment to justice and say that "it would be ideal" if the conviction of those responsible was made "in a shorter time" than was necessary to bring the accusation. The parties agree that “when justice is not swift it is not truly fair” and there are those who warn about the need to change the legislation on offshore and to establish political responsibilities.

There are still those who say that it is necessary to “turn the page of the 'owners of all this'”, causing a “flawed system” to fall, and those asking for “life imprisonment” given “the serious damage it caused to public accounts and the country's development” .

Desirable “conviction” in less than six years

The Socialist Party (PS) criticizes the delay of the Public Ministry to deduct the accusation and says that the “ideal” would be that the justice “condemns” those responsible for the “crimes committed” in the BES case “in a shorter time” than it was necessary to deduct the charge.

The vice president of the socialist parliamentary group João Paulo Correia considers it essential that justice “ascertain responsibilities, identify those responsible and, obviously, condemn the one of the biggest holes in recent history” in the country, “in this specific case, of one of the biggest holes in the financial system ”, to prevent the growth of the“ feeling of impunity on the part of the Portuguese public opinion ”in relation to the case.

After the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Rui Rio, also came to criticize the delay in justice, PSD deputy and vice president André Coelho Lima added, regarding the BES / GES case, that “when justice is not swift it is not truly fair” and that “what is normal is that in a rule of law and in a justice that fully functions, the simplest and most powerful citizens are strictly equal before the law ”.

"What is not normal or should not be is the delay that all these processes take, six years from the beginning of this process until the accusation has been presented", he said, adding that the deep justice reform, as it has been defended by Rui Rio, it makes even more sense before processes like this.

'Brake' to offshores and determination of political responsibilities

The Left Block (BE) came warn of the need to change the legislation on offshore, stressing that this should be one of the main lessons to be learned from the case of the collapse of BES / GES and argued that the financing of party campaigns by economic groups should be scrutinized.

“It is very important that justice is done in this case. We are talking about one of the largest Portuguese economic groups, perhaps the largest, which has become embroiled in a set of frauds, alleged crimes, some of which the commission of inquiry has already managed to prove and which deserve to be tried and must be tried, even for the sake of credibility of democracy itself ”, said BE deputy Mariana Mortágua.

The Communist Party (PCP) understands that the indictment in the BES case does not exclude the need to establish political responsibilities, “both from the PSD / CDS Government and from the resolution process that was done with absolutely fallacious data, and from the PS, with the ruinous privatization process that followed ”. "There are those responsible, who have to be held politically responsible for these wrong options that led to the situation we live in and the continuation of the bottomless hole in Novo Banco," said Communist deputy Duarte Alves.

Duarte Alves has not yet ruled out the possibility of a new commission of inquiry to investigate responsibilities. “This hypothesis has to be assessed when we have access to the audit report. At the time we will evaluate this hypothesis, but we have not ruled out that possibility ”, he assured.

Break with an “addicted system” and fight impunity

The president of CDS-PP, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, defended that Portugal must “turn the page of the 'owners of all this'” and bring down an “addicted system”, with a “new ethical attitude”. "Portugal has to turn the page of the 'owners of all this' once and for all, whether in the world of finance or politics, because the Portuguese have already paid dearly for it," he said, speaking to Lusa.

The spokesperson for People-Animals-Nature (PAN), André Silva, welcomed the deduction of the accusation in the BES case, “even if it was quite late, but it is still important to give a signal to citizens that the justice, albeit badly, will work ”. "It is not possible to have true justice when we are facing these times, this delay", he stressed.

In the same vein, Chega's sole deputy, André Ventura, said that the accusation “sins late” and for the “many millions of misguided people who remained to be discovered and unveiled in the various years of the empire” by Ricardo Salgado. André Ventura also stressed that this “is one of the cases in which life imprisonment should be on the table”, taking into account “the serious damage it caused to public accounts and the country's development”.
