The Vinhos Verdes region ended the first half of this year with a 9% increase in production compared to the same period last year, despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic context.
Exports from this wine region also performed positively in the first six months of this year, with growth of 3,9% in volume and 2,7% in value.
“In the context we are going through, the good numbers prove that the sector has not stopped,” said Nuno Russo, Secretary of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, in this solemn session commemorating the 112th anniversary of the demarcation of the Vinho Verde Region, which took place yesterday, September 18th, at the initiative of the Viticultural Commission of the Region (CVR) of Vinhos Verdes.
"A symbolic ceremony, given the context of the state of contingency declared by the Government, but which honored the history of the region, as Nuno Russo had the opportunity to underline", highlights a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture.
“The date of 18 September 1908 is long gone, but one hundred and twelve years later, here we are honoring your, our history. A path marked by affirmation, by strengthening the quality and positioning of the region ”, underlined the government official.
With production forecasts for 2020 that point to an increase of around 9%, compared to the previous year, reaching 890 thousand hectoliters, Nuno Russo stressed that “these values, which result essentially from work and good communication strategies, are for a stimulus and reveal the dynamics, allowing the Region of Vinhos Verdes, in the last VITIS [community program dedicated to the vineyard sector], to see more than one thousand applications approved, with a total value of 13,9 million euros, covering a total area of 1.224 hectares to be restructured ”.
“In the largest Portuguese Demarcated Region in terms of geographical area, the government official also highlighted the set of exceptional measures, implemented in recent months to minimize the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that allowed the region to count on support of more than two million euros. euros, in a total envelope of aid advanced by the Ministry of Agriculture of 18 million euros, coming from the National Support Program
to the wine sector, and destined for distillation (12 million euros) and crisis storage (six million euros) ”, points out the aforementioned communiqué from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Secretary of State Nuno Russo also highlighted the recent publication of legislation (Decree-Law no. 61/2020, of 18 August), which establishes the institutional organization of the wine sector and the respective legal regime, and which aims to ensure the deepening the level of legal protection of Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications.
"In this way, the Ministry of Agriculture recognizes the importance and the role of Designations of Origin (DO) and Geographical Indications (GI), in the agri-food sector and very particularly with regard to the country's winemaking reality", assured this official.
The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Rural Development also highlighted the “consistent increase in sales in the international markets for wines with PDO Vinho Verde, since 2015, in volume (18%) and in value (21%)”.
