Electric mobility was highlighted this Wednesday afternoon, at the “Portugal Smart Cities Summit 2020”, a summit that features Jornal Económico as a media partner, with the speakers defending its growing importance.

“Ten years on, electric mobility is a reality, electric buses are everywhere,” guaranteed Paulo Marques, technical director of Caetano Bus, recalling that the company “started in 2010, therefore ten years ago, to present its concepts of electric mobility where we present our first electric bus model ”.

In his intervention in the debate “buses, fleets of companies and the final kilometer to promote green cities”, Paulo Marques, who believes that “there is still a lot to do” with regard to electric mobility, said that “in 2010 we were the only ones builders presenting an electric bus and at that time nobody wanted to hear about electric buses ”.

In the same debate, Massimo Senatore, director general of BMW Portugal, highlighted the “sharp drop, with the pandemic, of car sales while electrified cars continued to rise”.

"It is a great result because electric mobility is underway, there is a strong argument, which is the urgency of decarbonisation", explained Massimo Senatore stressing that # in addition to cost savings, driving an electric vehicle is a socially responsible act ”.

The popularity of electric vehicles was confirmed by Ryan Fisher, from BloombergNEF, before the debate on green cities, which pointed to “2,3 million sales by the end of this year” of this type of vehicle, with China leading the list of transactions followed by Europe and North America. In Europe, in the second quarter of the year, the growth in sales of electric cars was 10%.

As for electric mobility, the project Mobi E, the administrator of EDP Comercial, António Coutinho defended the importance of “looking a little bit at how the model was created”, and reported that “the model was created with a logic for anticipating the market , to lead the market to create a cluster that could even be a global reference in this new context and I think that in this context we have to think that maybe we couldn't do that, the model today is unique in the world ”.

“We have so many business models that have emerged in the meantime and that made a lot of things possible and therefore the question is whether it makes sense to see a model of today, which was thought for mobility, whether it is fit for purpose in the current context of the sector ”, highlighted António Coutinho.

Still during the debate about green cities, in the event of which Jornal Económico is a media partner, Teresa Manso, director of communication and continuous improvement of DLH Express, praised the work done by the municipalities that have “also made important initiatives since the pact for the mobility that was launched in 2019 by the Lisbon City Council and that DHL joined.

“Another initiative that I cannot fail to mention is the alliance for the decarbonisation of transport where Portugal is present as well as other countries, as well as some municipalities in the north of the country also here together with Lisbon and some companies [such as] DHL and EDP ”, pointed out Teresa Manso.

“We have done some work in this regard and interesting work, but there is still a lot that really needs to be done, companies according to their context”, assumed the communication director of DLH Express.
