The deputy general secretary of the PS, José Luís Carneiro guaranteed that the PSD comes “at a bad time and against the progress” regarding the production of hydrogen, during his visit, on August 1, to the recovery works of the municipal market from Leiria.

“Now, at a time when the country is at the forefront of the group of countries that bet on hydrogen for the purposes of decarbonisation, in a project essentially financed by community funds, [the PSD] comes late, at a bad time and against progress” , José Luís Carneiro assured.

The PS deputy recalled that in the past the PSD “arrived late and at a bad time for the state's administrative modernization. He arrived late and at a bad time for the great Alqueva project. He arrived late and at a bad time for renewables and electric vehicles ”

“Defending decarbonisation and facing the challenges of climate change, reducing the country's energy dependence, also involves investing in hydrogen production and its incorporation into the most sustainable economic activity”, defended José Luís Carneiro.

On July 24, in the debate on the State of the Nation, Rui Rio described investment in hydrogen production as being an “extremely dangerous project”, and pointed out that the country does not have “conditions for adventures or megalomaniacal ideas”.

During the debate, the PSD leader also underlined the “Government investment in this sector, of 7 billion euros by 2030” compared to the 9 billion euros announced by Germany, which has a GDP “16 times higher than Portugal".

Meanwhile, on July 30, the National Hydrogen Strategy was approved by the Council of Ministers, and an investment of between “7 billion to 9 billion” was defined, as well as the “reduction of natural gas imports between 380 to 740 million euros ”and the creation of 8500 to 12000 new jobs, direct and indirect”.

Among the projects of the National Hydrogen Strategy are the creation of a green hydrogen production project in Sines, the decarbonisation of the heavy transport sector, the decarbonisation of the national industry, the creation of a collaborative hydrogen laboratory and the formalization of an application for the Important Project of Common European Interest for Hydrogen.
