The Government will extend the social energy tariff after the PS and PSD failed a similar proposal in Parliament in early April.

As the Jornal Económico revealed on Wednesday, the Government will extend the social energy tariff to workers on a lay-off. Thus, whoever has been reached by this measure, will now have a 34% discount on the monthly electricity and natural gas bill.

Almost two months ago, the Left Bloc moved forward with a similar measure, but both PS and PSD voted against the proposal in the vote that took place on April 8.

The BE measure was thus failed, counting on the abstention of the CDS-PP, Chega and Liberal Initiative, and the votes in favor of the Left Block, PCP, PAN, PEV and the non-registered deputy Joacine Katar Moreira.

“In energy, the discount on the social tariff is extended to all households with a drop in income of more than 20% compared to the previous month or the same period in 2019”, can be read in the proposal made by the Bloc, which also provided for a social tariff for water and waste, mandatory for all municipalities, for “income drops above 20%, exemption from payment of water supply up to 1500 liters per person and per month”.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC) revealed on Wednesday that it is preparing to extend the social tariff to cover workers in lay-off.

"At this stage, we can confirm that we are working on this topic," official MAAC source told Jornal Económico (JE), when asked whether the Government intended to proceed with this measure that was discussed today in Parliament.

"The decree-law will soon be known," said Minister João Pedro Matos Fernandes, and Secretary of State for Energy João Galamba.

The social tariff on electricity currently has about 750 thousand beneficiaries, while natural gas has about 35 thousand.

The social tariff has an estimated cost of more than 102 million euros for this year, being financed by electricity producing companies in Portugal: EDP (75 million euros), Turbogás (8,8 million euros), Endesa (seven million euros) ), Tejo Energia (5 million), Hidroelectrica do Guadiana (2,2 million).

After the Jornal Económico had advanced with the news, the deputy blocker Jorge Costa said he now hopes that the measure will be approved.

“I hope the news is confirmed. On April 8, this proposal was taken by the Bloc to Parliament and was rejected by PS and PSD. Let it go now. With or without lay-off, for all those who suffered a drop in income above 20% ”, wrote the deputy of Bloco de Esquerda 28 on social networks.
