The Secretary of State for Health, António Lacerda Sales, assured that the Government fulfilled its duty to defend the elderly, during the meeting with the permanent commission in the Assembly of the Republic, this Thursday, 9th of September.

"When a death is an extra death, what the elderly need is whoever defends them and that is what we did and that is what we will continue to do", guaranteed the government official.

This was the Government's response to the CDS-PP, which asked for the debate on the elderly and pointed out that the Government's work was insufficient in this matter. "The CDS-PP as an applicant speaks with the commentators' property after the games and we do not accept that this matter becomes a ranking of sensitivity towards the elderly", stressed the Secretary of State for Health.

“The Government was not stopped, the brigades [of quick intervention] are just another measure”, said António Lacerda Sales considering that the measures for the nursing homes came in a timely manner. “We didn't come late, we came at the right time and we came to respond to a complex period”, underlined the government official, who recalled that António Costa's executive has “worked with the Ministry of Labor, with the municipalities, with civil protection with a visit multidisciplinary teams ”in this matter.

Who also praised the Government's work was the Secretary of State for Social Action, Rita da Cunha Mendes: “It is not only now with the brigades that we are replacing or reinforcing human resources that is scarce in an outbreak situation”, said Rita da Cunha Mendes mentioned that through the IEFP “over these months we have placed more than 6800 people in more than a thousand institutions”.

“We prepared with the DGS the guidelines that were necessary for the implementation of preventive measures and contingency plans and disseminated them by the institutions and we monitor their implementation”, stressed Rita da Cunha Mendes.

“Through the preventive testing program, we tested more than 600 thousand home employees”, said the Secretary of State for Social Action, stressing that “Social Security complied with all health authorities, with municipalities, with Civil Protection all procedures and competences that were attributed to him in the scope of the dispatch of action with the homes with outbreaks ”.

Although the Government believes it has found timely responses to the problem with outbreaks in nursing homes, CDS-PP deputy João Almeida said that “the fact that there are still problems justifies that in this first Parliament debate” there was a “special attention to what goes on in homes ”.

"All these months have passed and unfortunately what at the time said the employees of the Vila Real home, which was a request for help, continues to be something we hear in many homes across the country," said deputy CDS-PP João Almeida.

The centrist deputy is of the opinion that the State was not able “during this period to create the conditions for these situations to stop happening or at least be reduced in homes” and points out that in addition to the “reguengos situation” there were also “cases in Alvarenga, It blew up and there were cases elsewhere in the country that probably none of us know about ”.

As for the district rapid intervention brigades, João Almeida considered the measure “offensive to everyone who works in the homes for the elderly who live in the homes and for the families of these elderly people”. “How is an emergency measure taken six months after the problem starts?” Asked the deputy of the CDS-PP.
