The President of the Republic alerted this Friday to the “severity” of the increase in contagions caused by the coronavirus in Portugal, calling for a reinforcement of care and the awareness of the population that it is necessary to make efforts in terms of coexistence between people.

“We are already in a period only comparable in severity, in the pandemic, to that which was experienced in the beginning of spring”, began by explaining Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaking to the press on the sidelines of a visit to the Braga hospital.

The head of state stressed that the Government will assess the national contingency situation, which ends on October 15th. "It was already known that the number of cases would rise to more than a thousand, that this would happen due to the opening of economic and social life, of schools and universities and polytechnics and of the greater interaction between people", he explained. However, he left warnings so that a situation that is “worrying” does not unfold.

Without giving his opinion on the State Budget for 2021, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke again about the new president of the Court of Auditors (TdC), reiterating that he has maintained the idea, since the revision of the 1997 Constitution, about the renewal of mandates in the courts and about the impossibility of being in the exercise of functions without time limit.

“There would be a single higher court with a different regime than all higher courts (Constitutional, Supreme Court of Justice, Supreme Administrative Court…). Everyone has a single mandate or limit of mandates, ”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The head of state, who on Tuesday appointed adviser judge José Tavares as president of the TdC after the prime minister's proposal, said that when choosing the name of Vítor Caldeira's successor he took into account that the position of the leader of the PSD, Rui Rio.

“I understand that the mandate of the new TdC president goes beyond this legislature and that it was very important in the position of the opposition leader. Meeting this position, it was the name that provoked his express support ”, said the President of the Republic. "It is true that in the choice, in the option, I was influenced by the position of the opposition leader because I think that no government is eternal", underlined Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
