The Secretary of State for Internal Administration warned today of "a very complicated meteorological scenario" in the coming days with a potential for occurrences of forest fires "difficult to manage" and which can become "almost catastrophic".
"Today, what we can say is that we are going to face days of enormous complexity and very high fire risk," Patrícia Gaspar told journalists, at the end of the meeting of the National Operational Coordination Center, at the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority ( ANEPC), where it was analyzed what happened in the last days and the expected risk until next Friday.
Noting that the situation is assessed daily between ANEPC and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the Secretary of State said that the meteorological context says that “any occurrence that may occur in the coming days has an enormous potential for almost catastrophic developments ”.
According to the minister, this week there will be strong winds and fire propagation speeds "much above average".
Patrícia Gaspar stressed that about 70% of the country's municipalities, especially in the central, northern and Algarve regions, are at maximum or high risk of rural fire.
"We are going to face a very complicated meteorological scenario with a potential for occurrences that are difficult to manage", he stressed.
