Prime Minister António Costa admitted this Monday that it is a possibility that Mário Centeno will succeed Carlos Costa as Governor of Banco de Portugal (BdP), at the end of the ceremony that installed the new team of the Ministry of Finance, now led by João Leão.

“If Centeno can be Governor of Banco de Portugal? Yes, it is a hypothesis. Mário Centeno has all the conditions to assume the position of Governor of BdP, until Carlos Costa, current Governor, has already admitted this ”, explains António Costa. Carrying out this assessment, the Prime Minister guaranteed that Mário Centeno "has all the skills from a personal, professional point of view and all the skills to exercise the functions of Governor, I believe that nobody has any doubts".

Regarding the consultation process that will lead to the choice of the next Governor, António Costa took the opportunity to criticize the way the Government led by Pedro Passos Coelhos acted in the appointment of Carlos Costa, a process in which no one was heard, defended the Prime Minister. “It is a matter that I will talk to the Minister of Finance, I will also have to see with the Governor, what is the calendar that you have in mind for the termination of your duties, in addition to what is the official mandate and as I said previously, I will never make a decision without first listening to the different political parties ”. Regarding the way in which the previous government nominated Carlos Costa, the prime minister stressed that he did not like “the way the previous government decided to renew the current governor without listening to anyone. I always said I wouldn't. So I will listen to everyone at the right time, then I will make a decision and announce it to the country ”.

The Prime Minister defended the possibility of Mário Centeno succeeding Carlos Costa as Governor of Banco de Portugal and took the opportunity to criticize the PAN's legislative initiative, which he defined as “a persecution of Mário Centeno”: “It was a crime the results that obtained as Minister of Finance? No one realizes that a law will be passed to prevent the appointment of Centeno to the BdP. The Government has its competences and these are not at will. ”

"In a rule of law and in democracy, ad hominem laws with the function of persecuting people are unacceptable laws in a democratic rule of law", reinforced the prime minister.

In an analysis of the change of team at the Ministry of Finance, António Costa said that what surprises is not Mário Centeno's departure: “What is surprising is that a Finance Minister follows a complete legislature, something that is very rare to happen. Centeno's departure is a gesture of continuity, there is no break ”, he concluded.
