The extraordinary pension update will cover about 1.500 billion pensioners next year, estimated the Secretary of State for Budget, Cláudia Joaquim, this Tuesday. In the presentation of the State Budget for 2021 (OE2021), the minister stressed that the measure will benefit pensioners with pensions up to 657 euros (1,5 IAS).

"We are talking about an update that will cover more than 1.500 billion pensioners," he said, stressing that "the planned update covers the vast majority of pensioners by the same amount by 2020".

Cláudia Joaquim pointed out that until 2021 the extraordinary update of pensions “corresponded to a differential compared to the regular update”, but that this year “the update planned for 2021 covers the vast majority of pensioners at exactly the same value until now”.

The lower pensions will have an extraordinary increase of 10 euros or six euros from August of next year, determined the Government in the proposal of the OE2021, delivered this Monday in the Parliament, a measure that will cost 120 million euros.

“The extraordinary update is made for the amount of 10 euros per pensioner, whose global amount of pensions is equal to or less than 1,5 times the value of the social support index (IAS), or six euros for pensioners who receive at least a pension whose fixed amount has been updated in the period between 2011 and 2015 ”, says the draft law.

That is, pensions that are below 1,5 IAS will have an extraordinary increase following what has been verified in recent years. "The value of the regular annual update, carried out in January 2021, is incorporated in the value of the extraordinary update provided for in the previous number", explains the document.
