Government signs protocol with Google to foster digital skills and entrepreneurship

Google and the Government established this Tuesday a collaboration agreement centered on the economic recovery of the country and the digital transition with the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the creation of digital skills and the promotion of entrepreneurship.

The Secretary of State for Digital Transition said the program “Grow Portugal with Google”Encompasses the incorporation of the most advanced technological tools, among which artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing, in the companies' business models.

“It is a technological company of reference in our market and perhaps the most relevant in the world in the treatment of large volumes of data ( ) ”, Highlighted André de Aragão Azevedo, in an online conference recorded from the Ministry of Economy.

At stake is a public-private partnership that results from "alignment and convergence of agendas", according to the Government. "It is difficult to think of a digital transition that does not count on the contribution of those who are market leaders, converging with public policy", explained the minister, referring to the cooperation by the national polytechnic institutes.

As part of the signing of this protocol, the Minister of State, Economy and Digital Transition reiterated that if the economy and society of the future are more digital, they will be more productive and warned that there is still work to be done in the digital training of companies.

The Google programs that will now be created or extended are intended to ensure the qualification of people who have access to digital tools (basic) or the development of (specific) programming languages, according to the minister. "This memo is significant, because it means that a world leader in these technologies puts at the service of our community a set of essential tools for the digital world to be increasingly inclusive and available to all organizations", said Pedro Siza Vieira.

Already country manager from Google Portugal called for investment in digital skills, in which the country has a “historic deficit”. "The digital transition was already happening, but the pandemic forced an acceleration for which many companies were not prepared", recalled Bernardo Correia. “Jobs of the future need digital skills. It is now more urgent to invest in people and business for a sustained recovery ”, he concluded.

With this memo, Google strengthens its collaboration with the Digital Transition Action Plan in a trio composed of: development of digital skills and employability; entrepreneurship / startups and AI.
