Government says application to track viruses brings "efficiency to public health work"

The Minister of Health reiterated this Friday that "soon" will be available for experimental use at application portuguese from contact tracing, which has been developed by INESC TEC - Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science.

Marta Temido said at a press conference that the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) will issue its opinion in a “days or hours”.

“Downloading the application is a voluntary and individual option and which, provided that access to information is guaranteed through a health professional, is a relevant, useful and safe way to, in case a case is considered positive, your contacts more easily located and warned. Therefore, there is an efficiency advantage here for all public health work ”, the minister told reporters.

The Government guarantees the national data protection authority has been involved in this process. "As far as we know, there will be concrete information about it within the next few days or hours," explained the minister, a day after an official CNPD source told Jornal Económico (JE) that she had not yet issued an opinion on the Stay Away contact tracking application developed by INESC TEC.

Social Democrat deputy Ricardo Baptista Leite signaled yesterday that this application could have already been endorsed by CNPD, after the usual meeting at Infarmed with politicians and experts. “This information is not correct. CNPD is analyzing the application and has not yet issued an opinion, although it expects to do so very soon ”, explained the entity led by Filipa Calvão to JE.
