The secretary-general of the Communist Party (PCP), Jerónimo de Sousa, said this Tuesday that if no answers to the country's structural problems are presented in the State Budget for 2021 (OE2021), social instability will be inevitable. The communist leader warns that the "social dramas" will increase significantly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and urges the Government to "value wages and rights".

“If concrete answers are not found [for social problems], all political stability can be achieved, but the truth is that social instability and social dramas in our country will increase significantly. This is what we are fighting against, ”said Jerónimo de Sousa, regarding the OE2021 negotiations, in statements on the sidelines of the initiative that marks the 50th anniversary of CGTP-IN, in Lisbon.

Jerónimo de Sousa said that one of the "advantages" of going into politics "for many years" is to know that "whenever political stability has been transformed into an absolute value, the results have been disastrous". “That is why, in our view, this stability is achieved by giving an answer in the immediate plan and, naturally, in a more fundamental plan”, he stressed, listing the increase in wages as a priority measure.

Despite recognizing that the pandemic has forced the adoption of exceptional measures, Jerónimo de Sousa argues that this “does not invalidate the need to recover a central thesis of the past years that we live”: contrary to what many said, “it was the valorization of wages and rights that led - in addition to improving living conditions, of course - to increased purchasing power, the development of the internal market and the economy ”.

"It was a lesson and a teaching that unfortunately seems to be forgotten at this moment", he lamented.

The communist secretary-general also guaranteed that the PCP has sought to make its contribution to the budget proposal, "without any mental reserve". Despite considering that the negotiations are still “in a very preliminary phase”, Jerónimo de Sousa leaves a warning: “we do not accompany those who, instead of looking for the answers to the national problems, of the workers and the people, threaten with a crisis policy".

If there is no agreement on the Budget and the country has been managed in twelfths, the communist leader says that "it will be a sign that the Government has not met the just demands for concrete aspirations and the national interest itself".
