The Parliament approved this Friday the proposals of the Socialist Party (PS) to circumvent the presidential lead to the diplomas that foresaw a reduction of the European debates and an increase in the number of signatures necessary for petitions. The new diplomas that will be sent to the Palace of Belém provide for two European debates per semester and a reduction from 10 to 7.500 signatures to discuss a petition in plenary.

The proposal was presented by the PS, in the review of the two diplomas that were vetoed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. This is because on August 10, the head of state vetoed the decree of the Assembly of the Republic which reduced the number of European debates to two per year in plenary and, two days later, the diploma that raised the number of signatures from four thousand to ten thousand for petitions to be considered in plenary.

The two initiatives were voted on by points, in plenary, and had the votes against the Left Bloc (BE), Communist Party (PCP), CDS-PP, PAN, Ecological Party “Os Verdes” (PEV), Chega, Liberal Initiative and non-attached deputies Joacine Katar-Moreira and Cristina Rodrigues.

In the vote on the PS proposal on the duplication of European debates, the PSD voted in favor, together with the PS. In the vote on the increase in the number of signatures required for petitions, the PSD abstained, considering that the initial proposal did not need “any stir”.

The new diploma will now be sent to the Palace of Belém, and the President of the Republic, after the initial lead, will have to promulgate the new proposal approved in the Assembly of the Republic.
