The Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, and the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, will be heard in parliament about the outbreaks of covid-19 recorded in homes, such as what happened in Reguengos de Monsaraz.

The Labor and Social Security Commission of the Assembly of the Republic unanimously approved, this Thursday, requirements of the PSD, CDS-PP and People-Animals-Nature (PAN) that request the hearing of the governors and also the director-general of Health , Graça Freitas.

In its application, the PSD defends that “the inability that the Government has shown in preventing and recurrently combating the occurrence of outbreaks in homes is very serious” and adds that “the lack of responsibility and the devaluation of the very serious events that culminated in the death of 18 people in a home to Reguengos de Monsaraz is politically incomprehensible and humanly unacceptable ”.

The Social Democrats consider it “essential and urgent to fully clarify the work of the Ministries of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security and Health, in their respective areas of activity, in relation to nursing homes, as well as to make known the measures and actions for this sector , either in terms of human resources, especially in terms of clinical staff, or in terms of financing and rules of conduct (...), with a view to minimizing or preventing the appearance of new outbreaks of covid-19 in the referred institutions ”.

For its part, the CDS-PP, in addition to requesting the hearing of the ministers of health and social security, also intends to hear the director general of health, Graça Freitas, stressing that “it is the duty of parliament to monitor everything related to the pandemic ”of covid-19,“ namely the measures that are, or should be, being taken in Portugal ”.

The PAN requirement emphasizes that it is necessary “to determine responsibilities and what has failed in Reguengos, despite the investigation of the Public Ministry, in terms of health care, as well as in terms of the inspection of Social Security”.

"PAN argues that the Government must review its strategy of epidemiological monitoring in homes for the elderly, as well as strengthen health professionals in institutions that welcome the most vulnerable population in terms of age and living conditions in the community", reads up in the text.

With regard to children and young people in residential situations, the party says that “it is not understandable that, even in the face of negative tests, these children and young people are obliged to isolate themselves for 14 days, whenever they leave the institution and return, when the same requirements are not placed in other contexts ”, asking for a revision of this guidance from the Directorate-General for Health.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 863.679 deaths and infected more than 26 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP. In Portugal, 1.829 people died from 59.051 confirmed to be infected, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
