The deputy and leader of the PCP's parliamentary bench, João Oliveira, announced this Friday that his party continues to oppose the application of the state of emergency, as a way to fight the pandemic, and therefore the communists vote against the renewal of the state of emergency for another fifteen days.

"The restrictive measures that have been imposed under the state of emergency do not allow the necessary stopping of the epidemic and are, at the same time, throwing the country into an unsustainable economic and social situation", said the deputy, during the plenary debate that decides the renewal state of emergency.

According to João Oliveira, the PCP understands that the state of emergency as a recipe to fight the pandemic is wrong “because it completely disregards the first and the main question that is posed to the country, which is the definition of health conditions and security so that life proceed as normal as possible in the circumstances in which we live ”.

“To accentuate the lack of accountability of public authorities, in favor of individual accountability and the limitation of rights and freedoms and guarantees, for riding a wave of fear and panic, promoted on a mass scale, contributing to the multiplication of limits on the exercise of rights from the wrong idea that this is where the solution to the problems we face is ”is a wrong assumption for communists.

For this reason, “the reasons for the PCP's refusal remain”, since the communists understand that the state of emergency is based “on the idea that all rights can be sacrificed because of the pandemic”.

“It is becoming increasingly evident that the recipe is wrong. The negative evolution of the economic and social situation in Portugal confirms that restrictive measures are pushing millions of Portuguese people into unemployment, poverty, indebtedness, ruin, uncertainty and insecurity about the future ”, he said, stressing that the country already has more “100 thousand unemployed” than in 2019.

João Oliveira also took the opportunity to criticize the PSD for criticizing the holding of the PCP congress, scheduled for November 28 and 29.

“The PCP congress will be held with all the conditions and guarantees of health rules”, he guaranteed, questioning the social democrat Adão Silva if the PSD's position would be “another Chega order that the PSD fulfilled”.
