Mário Centeno takes over as governor, after the appointment of the former finance minister as the successor to Carlos Costa at the head of the regulator was approved last week in the Council of Ministers and published in Diário da República.

The new governor of BdP takes office with a public session, at 11:30 am, in the Salão Nobre of the Ministry of Finance, succeeding Carlos Costa, who resigns after ten years. After months of speculation, the appointment of Mário Centeno took place after the Budget and Finance Commission (COF) approved the hearing report of the former minister, despite the votes against the CDS, Bloco de Esquerda, PAN, Liberal Initiative and the social-democratic deputy Álvaro Almeida.

The report of the hearing, delivered last Monday, by socialist deputy João Paulo Correia, also had the PSD and PCP abstained and the PS voted in favor, while deputy André Ventura, from Chega, did not vote because he was absent.

The report, of a descriptive nature, represented a formality in the process of appointing the governor of the banking regulator, since it had no binding character, but was mandatory by law. According to the Organic Law of the BdP, "the appointment of the governor is made by resolution of the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Minister of Finance and after hearing by the competent committee of the Assembly of the Republic, which must prepare the respective descriptive report".

At the hearing, the former finance minister revealed to COF deputies that he felt “qualified, motivated and supported”, even though all groups, except the PS, had during the hearing expressed opposition to their nomination. One of the possible obstacles to Mário Centeno's nomination, which marked the hearing, also fell this week, after the Supreme Administrative Court (STA) declared itself incompetent in the precautionary measure against the nomination until the vote on the specialty in the bill is made do PAN - People, Animals, Nature that imposes five years of incompatibility on whoever has been Minister of Finance, presented by the deputy of the Liberal Initiative, João Cotrim Figueiredo.
