The coordinator of the Left Block (BE), Catarina Martins, insists that the State Budget for 2021 (OE2021) includes funds for the Novo Banco. The leader of the blockade says that the Minister of Finance, João Leão, was clear in recognizing that the OE2021 “gives 200 million euros from the Resolution Fund”, to which is added the bank loan to the Resolution Fund, which “will have to be paid by the State ”.
“I focus on what people have told me with which we have negotiated the State Budget and with whom we have had meetings and sought solutions. I note that the Minister of Finance recognizes that this State Budget gives 200 million euros of the Resolution Fund, with public money, to go to the New Bank, to which is added the loan that the banks make to the Resolution Fund ”, said Catarina Martins, to the journalists.
The blockade leader said that, with this loan, the Resolution Fund “will be more indebted” and “the State will have to pay”. “In total, it is more than 400 million euros that this State Budget places on Novo Banco even before an investigation audit. These are the data that are written in OE2021 and confirmed by the Minister of Finance ”, added Catarina Martins.
Assuring that in negotiations with the Government the issue of Novo Banco was discussed “very frankly”, Catarina Martins recognizes that “divergences are normal”. However, he underlined: "the Minister of Finance, on this matter, has already been crystal clear in the interviews he gave and the 448 million euros for the Novo Banco are reflected in the State Budget through these two channels".
Catarina Martins' explanations come after the Socialist Party (PS) accused the BE coordinator of “lying” by saying that OE2021 will not “advance further” in the fight against poverty because of the capital injection to Novo Banco. The PS parliamentary group guarantees that “the OE2021 does not provide for the transfer of public money to the Resolution Fund so that it can be forwarded to Novo Banco”.
“These charges are based on a lie and that lie has to be undone. We cannot fail to denounce it ”, said the vice-president of the PS parliamentary group João Paulo Correia.
