OLYMPIC DAY AT LISBON'S WORLD FAIR

OFFICIAL CEREMONIES WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

SURF AND THE MARQUIS OF SAMARANCH

After the signature of a Protocol between the City of Lisbon and the Portuguese Olympic Committee, by which the Mayor of Lisbon, Dr. João Soares, and his Sports Director, Dra. Luisa Magrinho, now give the POC a building for its definitive Headquarters, ceremony presided by the Number 1 Man of World Sport, the President of the International Olympic Committee, D. Juan Antonio Samaranch, visiting Portugal at the moment, was Chairman of the official ceremonies of the Olympic Day, at Lisbon's World Fair, Expo'98, in the company of Portuguese Sports Minister José Sócrates, Secretary of State for the Sport Miranda Calha and his Chief of Cabinet Gil Pinheiro, General Commissary and representative of the IOC in Portugal Fernando Bello, and, of course, the President of Portuguese Olympic Committee, Commander Vicente Moura, among many distinguished guests, national and international. A lot of Media, many visitors, and even portuguese marathon gold medalist Rosa Mota was there...

SURPRISE... PLEASANT SURPRISE !

The Pavilion of International Olympic Committee contains relics dear to olympism, some of them precious to the sport's history of our country, and two niches allegorical to Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.

Then, to our surprise and happiness, an ornamental item was spotted in the center of everything, on the access to the VIP area of the 1st floor of the Pavilion: nothing less than an oil painting of...

...a surfer riding a wave!...

The IOC's President stooped there and they talked about it for a minute. After that and during the official ceremonies, Commander Vicente Moura and Commissary Fernando Bello discreetly greeted the representatives of the Portuguese Surfing Federation, in a silent message of support and appreciation.

After that, the PSF General Secretary and the Marquis of Samaranch exchanged brief impressions on the Olympic expectations of Surf and Bodyboard for the Games of 2004 and we stated our gratefulness for the Olympic recognition of our disciplines, by the hand of the International Surfing Association, in September 1997.

That recognition, issued in March 95 with a 2 years compulsory holding period, was made definitive by the Document 2200/97/GMF/kjh, on September 4, 1997, by the 106th Session of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland, and it ends with the sentence "I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Olympic Family", signed by Marquis D. Juan Antonio Samaranch.

As the youngest of IOC's recognized sports with right of participation, we are proud of the distinction meant by that picture in that special place, which meets and represents the symbolism of our expectations to ascend to the highest level of World Sport, guided by the noble ideals that olympism defines and promotes, aware that we are thus answering in a fair manner to the thousands and thousands of young men and women that all over the world, at a growing rate, are letting themselves be conquered by the fascination of wave sports.

To all those who already have a wider past at the service of the Olympic cause, and on behalf of the newest member of the family, we thank you for your acceptance, support and friendship!
